Some places touch us deeply - because they are real. The Kastenalm in the Karwendel is such a place. Nestled in an unspoilt mountain landscape and surrounded by the impressive peaks of the Karwendel mountains, it lies on a vast alpine meadow that seems so peaceful and unspoilt, as if time has stood still. Whether on foot or by mountain bike - this trail is worthwhile for anyone who really wants to experience Tyrol.

Starting point Scharnitz - The trail begins
The starting point is the small Tyrolean border village of Scharnitz, which is an excellent starting point. Here you will find paid car parks from where you can set off directly onto the well-maintained forest trail. The trail has a pleasantly flat ascent and is perfect for hikers and mountain bikers - and best of all, it leads right through the heart of the Karwendel.

The source of the Isar - where Tyrol's river wonder rises
After just a short time, you will reach the source of the Isar - a very special highlight. Crystal-clear water emerges from the Karwendel ground here in several springs and forms one of the most famous rivers in the Alps. It's worth taking a short break here to feel the energy of the place.

Kastenalm - refreshment stop with a view
After around 2.5 to 3 hours, you will reach the Kastenalm, picturesquely situated on an open alpine pasture with a fantastic view of the surrounding Karwendel peaks. Here you can either enjoy the picnic you have brought with you or stop off directly at the hut - where you can enjoy simple meals and cool drinks. A place where you'll want to stay longer.

For those who want more: continue to the Hallerangeralm or the Hallerangerhaus
Ambitious hikers or mountain bikers have the option of continuing on from the Kastenalm to the Hallerangeralm or the Hallerangerhaus. Both are beautifully situated in a wide valley basin and offer overnight accommodation in the heart of the mountains.
Spectacular & wild: Vomper Loch via the Überschalljoch
If you really want to go alpine, you can descend from the Hallerangeralm via the Überschalljoch into the legendary Vomper Loch - the wildest valley in Tyrol. This route is long, strenuous and technically demanding, but a real scenic adventure. The trail leads deep into unspoilt mountain nature before descending into the Inntal valley.
