Probably the most deserted valley in Tyrol - the “Vomper Loch”

A hidden gem in the Karwendel mountains - the Vomper Loch

Even in the touristy Tyrol, there are still spots that seem completely untouched. Where there is no mountain railroad humming, no kiosk waiting, no Instagram spot signposted. Vomper Loch is one such place - secluded, wild, rugged and beautiful. For us, it is one of the most pristine areas in the whole country.

Loneliness with a history

The valley is not only a spectacular landscape - it also has a turbulent past. In the final years of the Second World War, Wehrmacht deserters hid here. Up to 30 men held out in self-built huts deep in the Karwendel. A silent resistance in the middle of the wilderness - far away from the world, and yet full of hope.

This story gives the valley a special depth. Every step on the path seems to reach into this past.

Hike into the original

The Vomper Loch can be hiked all the way through - or explored in stages. Either up from Volders, where you can also reach the famous cat ladder at the Zweigloch, or down from the Hallerangerhaus. The trail leads through narrow gorges, past old paths, rock faces and quiet watercourses. In places, wire ropes and ladders are used for safety - not for the faint-hearted, but a real highlight for experienced mountain hikers.

Particularly impressive are the “Graupen” - small, shimmering turquoise pools of water, ice-cold and crystal clear. And yes: swimming is possible if you dare. An incredible nature experience, far away from civilization.

You can really come down here. No reception, no crowds - just silence, rock, water and forest. A place that seems to have fallen out of time. This is what the original Tyrol feels like.

Our recommendation - a tour lasting several days

Those looking for the full experience can tackle the Vomper Loch as part of a two-day tour: from Volders up through the valley, then overnight at the Hallerangerhaus mountain hut, and the next day out to Scharnitz - from there the train will take you back in comfort.

But beware: this tour is long and demanding. You need to be in good physical condition, sure-footed, experienced in alpine terrain - and definitely have enough water and provisions.

The further in you go, the quieter it gets. The peace that spreads out there is almost unimaginable. For me, this was one of the most intense hikes in Tyrol - physically demanding, but incredibly enriching for the soul. The landscape, the vastness, the silence - they carry something that can hardly be described in words.

Tips for your tour

  • For experienced hikers only: The trail is narrow and exposed in places - not a walk or a family hike.

  • Provisions & water: There are no supplies in the valley. Take everything you need with you!

  • Overnight stay: Hallerangerhaus or Lamsenjochhütte are ideal for longer tours - book in advance!

  • Nature & respect: No garbage, no music - the valley is a place of power, not a leisure park.

Conclusion - A valley that gets under your skin

For us, the Vomper Loch is one of the most impressive places in Tyrol. It combines untouched nature, historical depth and a tranquillity that is hard to find today. If you want to experience Tyrol from its wild, original side, you should set off on this trail - with open eyes, full respect and a touch of adventure.

When you hike there, you are not just hiking through a valley - you are hiking through history, through solitude, through a world that has not yet become loud.
