There are places that you will never forget. Places where time seems to stand still and nature embraces you in all its power. One of these places lies hidden in the heart of the Tyrolean Karwendel - the source of the Isar. A place that not only impresses with its scenery, but also touches you deeply. For many, it is a true place of power, a natural wonder in the midst of untouched mountain landscapes.

Hiking or mountain biking - your route to the source of the Isar
The trail to the source of the Isar begins in Scharnitz, a small village on the border with Bavaria. Here you can already feel that you have arrived - at the entrance to the wild Karwendel, far away from the noise of everyday life. The trail itself is around 13 kilometers long, largely flat and ideal for a bike or hiking tour. This route is particularly easy to experience on a mountain bike or e-bike - always along the crystal-clear Isarbach stream, surrounded by dense forests and majestic rock faces.
But every step is also worthwhile on foot. Nature accompanies you with rushing streams, birdsong and a fresh, spicy mountain air that can hardly be described - you simply have to breathe it.

Arrive and take a deep breath - at the source of the Isar
After around 1.5 to 2 hours (depending on your pace and break), you reach the source of the Isar. Several spring streams unite here to form one of the most famous rivers in Europe - the Isar, which later flows through Munich.
It gets quiet here. Nature speaks for itself. The water is crystal clear, ice-cold and incredibly pure. It is the perfect place for a break, a picnic on one of the meadows or simply to linger and marvel. Many visitors say that this place gives them new energy - and we can only confirm that.

If you want to go further - pure nature towards Kasten, Erlanger Hütte or over the Ursprungssattel saddle
If you want to go further, the path leads to the Kastenalm. The views up here are simply stunning.
Despite the popularity of the starting point in Scharnitz, you will find many quiet, almost lonely moments along the route that show you how pristine and untouched Tyrol still is in many places. This combination of accessibility and wilderness is what makes the Karwendel so appealing - and that's exactly what we love about it

Our conclusion: the Isarursprung is more than just a place to visit
For us, the Isarursprung is not just a place, but a feeling. A piece of real Tyrol. It's one of those places that you return to again and again because you can't get away from it.
Whether you're on a mountain bike, on foot or with the family - this tour not only gives you fantastic views, but also peace, space and a real experience of nature. And who knows: maybe the source of the Isar will become your own personal place of power.
📌 Insider tip:
Start early in the morning so that you can enjoy the trail and the source in peace and quiet. Ideally during the week - that way you'll have nature almost to yourself. And don't forget to take plenty of water, a snack and a camera - it's worth it!
Particularly beautiful: there are some idyllic meadows and shallow banks at the source of the Isar - perfect for a cozy picnic in the midst of untouched nature. And if you like, you can cool your feet in the ice-cold, crystal-clear spring water of the Isar - a refreshing treat after a hike or bike tour!
