Hike to the Viggarspitze: easy ascent, spectacular views

Summit cross on a mountain in Tyrol
Fantastic view from the summit at an altitude of 2,306 meters

Just a few kilometers from Innsbruck, an unforgettable nature experience begins: the hike to the Viggarspitze via the Zirbenweg is one of the most beautiful tours around the Tyrolean capital. Breathtaking views, rustic alpine pastures, and an easy trail with alpine flair—perfect for nature lovers, photographers, and families. And best of all, the tour can be wonderfully combined with a city trip to Innsbruck!

Why is the hike to Viggarspitze so special?

  • The tour to the Viggarspitze combines everything that makes Tyrol special:

  • Unique views of the Inn Valley, the Nordkette mountain range, and the Wipptal valley

  • Ancient Swiss stone pine forests, the largest Swiss stone pine forest in Central Europe

  • Four charming alpine huts that invite you to stop for a bite to eat

  • A trail that is easy to walk—but leads to a real summit at the end!

Despite the pleasant route, this is a high-altitude alpine tour. Sure-footedness and good equipment are therefore important—even “easy” trails can quickly become challenging in the Alps.

Our personal impression

This hike was a real highlight for us as a family. The moment when you stand on top of the Viggarspitze and let your gaze wander over the Inn Valley and the Nordkette mountain range – unforgettable! It is especially beautiful in the morning or late afternoon when the light falls golden over the mountains.

The combination of being close to nature, gentle exercise, and culinary delights at the alpine pastures makes this tour a perfect day trip.

Our tips

Getting there

The starting point is the Patscherkofelbahn valley station in Igls. There is free parking available with a lift ticket. Alternatively, you can also get there by public transport – ideal if you want to start at the top and hike down into the valley.

Best season/time of day

Spring to fall is ideal, especially June to October. For photographers, the morning and evening hours are fantastic—keyword: golden hour!

Activities

  • Hiking with panoramic views

  • Photography (especially at sunrise or sunset)

  • Stop for refreshments at one of the four alpine huts

  • Animal watching (marmots, eagles, cows)

Insider tips

  • Be sure to take in the Zirbenweg trail – the old trees exude a pleasant scent.

  • The final ascent to the Viggarspitze is short but somewhat steeper – hiking poles can help.

  • Stop at the alpine huts early – they can get crowded at lunchtime: Lanser Alm, Sistranser Alm, Aldranser Alm, and Rinner Alm.

Practical tip

If you like a challenge, start directly in Igls – this is the long route. The shorter (and more family-friendly) option is to start the ascent from the Patscherkofelbahn mountain station.
