A nature experience in Sellrain - from Lüsens into the heart of the Stubai Alps
Arrival & starting point
Our hike begins in the idyllic village of Gries im Sellrain. From there, a well-maintained road leads into the valley to the end of the valley to Lüsens. There is a large paid parking lot there. The daily fee is eight euros. If you want to stay overnight at the Westfalenhaus, you can easily leave your vehicle there for several days.
The ascent to the Westfalenhaus
From the parking lot, a wide hiking trail leads pleasantly uphill into the valley. At the beginning, you walk leisurely along a clear mountain stream - accompanied by the sound of the water and the impressive panorama of the surrounding peaks of the Stubai Alps
After about 2 kilometers, the wide valley path ends and the actual climb to the Westfalenhaus begins. From here it becomes noticeably steeper, but the well-marked path ensures that you can find your way safely.
The path leads through a beautiful mountain forest with old stone pines and spruces, past small waterfalls. The air is clear and fresh, ideal for taking a deep breath - a real nature experience. After around 300 meters in altitude, you reach an extensive high plateau where the terrain flattens out a little. The Westfalenhaus (2,273 m) can already be seen in the distance. You now have another 250 to 300 meters of ascent to the hut.
The hut: Westfalenhaus
The Westfalenhaus is a cozy base in the middle of the high alpine landscape - perfect for an overnight stay after the ascent or as a starting point for further tours. The hut offers a friendly atmosphere, good food and a genuine Tyrolean hut feeling.
Tour tips for summit seekers
If you want to continue the next day, there are numerous options for alpine summit tours from the Westfalenhaus. Particularly worthwhile are:
Winnebacher Weißkogel (3,185 m)
Lüsener Fernerkogel (3,298 m)
Western Seeblaskogel (3,040 m)
Praxmarerkarspitze (3,082 m)
as well as glacier accesses around the Schwarzenbergferner
These tours require alpine experience and appropriate equipment, but reward you with impressive views and a real high mountain atmosphere.
