Hike up the Glungezer

Updated: Nov 8, 2024

A particularly charming hike leads to the Glungezer, a 2,677-metre-high peak in the Tux Alps in Tyrol. It is not only known for its impressive views, but also for its varied hiking route, which leads through alpine landscapes, forests and past charming huts. In this blog post, I would like to share my experience of hiking the Glungezer with you and give a special recommendation on how to get the most out of this experience.

Arrival and starting point

The Glungezer is located around 15 kilometers south-east of Innsbruck and is easily accessible by car or public transport. The starting point of the hike is often the village of Tulfes, from where you can take the Glungezerbahn cable car to shorten the ascent a little. Alternatively, you can also start on foot from Tulfes, which makes the hike a little more challenging, but also more rewarding as you can experience more of the surroundings.

The ascent

The first section of the hike leads through dense forests and is relatively easy. Here you have the opportunity to warm up slowly and enjoy the tranquillity of nature. The trail is well signposted and leads in the direction of the Tulfeinalm, which lies at around 2,035 meters. This alpine pasture is a good first resting place where you can enjoy the view of the surrounding mountains and valleys:

From the Tulfeinalm, the path becomes steeper and increasingly leads into more alpine terrain. The vegetation becomes sparser and the tree line is soon reached. From here, the view opens up to the surrounding peaks of the Tux Alps and the Inn Valley. The path is rocky in places, but easy to walk on as long as you wear sturdy footwear.

The summit

The last section to the summit is strenuous, but the view of the surrounding mountains and the feeling of being so close to heaven make up for any effort. Once you reach the top, you are rewarded with a breathtaking panorama: the Karwendel mountains stretch out to the north, while to the south you can see the Zillertal Alps and even the Grossglockner if the weather is clear.

A particular highlight is the summit cross, which is perfect for a souvenir photo. The summit is also ideal for an extended break where you can enjoy the snack you brought with you. On sunny days, it is an incomparable experience to linger up here and soak up the silence of the mountains.

If you want to stay longer, you can spend the night at the Glungezerhütte and continue hiking from there, for example towards the Lizumer Hütte or along the popular Inntaler Höhenweg. This extension of the tour offers the opportunity to delve even deeper into the fascinating mountain world of the Tux Alps and discover more peaks and alpine pastures.

Alternatively, you can take the ascent route again, although this requires concentration on the descent as it is quite steep in places.

Conclusion

The hike up the Glungezer is a real highlight for anyone who wants to experience the Tyrolean Alps in all their glory. It not only offers sporting challenges, but also unforgettable nature experiences. We particularly recommend an overnight stay at the Glungezerhütte, which allows you to enjoy the tranquillity of the mountains to the full in the early hours of the morning or at sunset and continue your hike the next day.

Whether you enjoy the view from the summit, explore the Swiss stone pine trail or discover the diverse flora and fauna along the way - the hike up the Glungezer is an experience that will stay with you for a long time.
