Hallerangerhaus in the Karwendel - hiking and biking to one of the most beautiful places in Tyrol

There are places that make you forget everything. Where the world becomes quieter, the view wider and the heart lighter. One of these places is the Hallerangerhaus in the Karwendel mountains - surrounded by wild rocks, ancient forests and the crystal-clear waters of the young Isar.

Anyone who enjoys hiking or mountain biking will love this tour. It is not only a sporting adventure, but also a journey to one of Tyrol's most pristine natural wonders.

Trail in the mountains of Tyrol
The long way through the beautiful Karwendel

Starting point Scharnitz - the gateway to the Karwendel

The tour begins in Scharnitz, a small town on the border with Bavaria. This is where the trail starts into the heart of the Karwendel mountains. After just a few meters, you leave the hustle and bustle behind and immerse yourself in a world that seems to have fallen out of time. The wide forest path along the Isar is well developed and ideal for mountain biking - but it's also a fantastic walk.

The source of the Isar - a place of power in the middle of nature

After around 13 kilometers (ideal by bike, but also doable on foot) you reach one of the highlights of the tour: the source of the Isar. Here, in the middle of the Karwendel, is the source of the river that later flows through Munich - and yet this place seems as if it has remained a secret. The water is ice-cold, clear as glass, and the view of the surrounding peaks is simply stunning.

Tip: Pack a small snack - a picnic at the source of the Isar is an experience you won't forget.

Continue to the Hallerangerhaus - a stop with a view

From the source of the Isar, continue in the direction of Hallerangerhaus. The trail leads over the original saddle - it gets a little steeper here, but the effort is worth it. Once you reach the top, the view of the high plateau around the Hallerangerhaus opens up - green alpine pastures, steep limestone walls, silence.

The Hallerangerhaus itself is located at around 1,768 meters and is a rustic hut with genuine Tyrolean charm. Here you can stop off for refreshments or even spend the night - and enjoy the feeling of being far away from everyday life.

Hiking or biking? Both are worthwhile!

Mountain bike tour: Ideal for sporty cyclists. The route to the Hallerangerhaus is around 20 km long (easy) and mostly easy to ride. E-bikes are also possible.

Hiking: If you prefer walking, you can complete the route in stages. Especially nice: an overnight stay at the Hallerangerhaus and a leisurely return the next day.

Why this tour is so special

The Karwendel is one of the last great wilderness areas in the Alps. Here you can feel nature - genuine, pristine and unadorned. No noise, no cars, no distractions. Just you, your path, the mountains and the sound of the Isar. For us, this is one of the most beautiful places in Tyrol - and a place you want to return to again and again.
