When the leaves turn golden and the scent of roasted chestnuts fills the air, South Tyrol shows itself from its most beautiful side. The Keschtnweg – or Chestnut Trail – leads through the picturesque slopes of the Eisack Valley, past old farms, chestnut groves, and impressive panoramic views of the Dolomites. For us, this trail is always a fall highlight.

Why is it the "Kastanienweg" so special?
The "Kastanienweg" is much more than just a hiking trail. It tells stories of tradition, agriculture, and regional culture. Especially in autumn, during the Törggele season, the region is transformed into a feast for all the senses: freshly roasted chestnuts, new wine (“Siaßer”), and warm hospitality make this hike unique.

Our personal impression
We hiked the section from Feldthurns to Neustift. We particularly enjoyed the contrast between dense chestnut forests and open meadows with views of the Geisler peaks. The children loved collecting chestnuts while we adults enjoyed the panoramic view of the Eisack Valley.

🥾 Route of the Keschtnweg (Chestnut Trail)
The Keschtnweg runs along the western slope of the Eisack Valley in South Tyrol and stretches for around 60 kilometers from Klausen (Chiusa) to Bozen (Bolzano). It passes through several idyllic villages, including:
Varna
Renon

Our tips
Getting there
The best way to get to Feldthurns is by car or bus. Parking is available in the village itself or at the inns along the route.
🌰 Tip for connoisseurs
In autumn, especially in October, it's Törggele season along the Keschtnweg trail – the perfect opportunity to combine your hike with regional specialities.
Best season/time of day
The best time for the Keschtnweg is from late September to early November, when the chestnuts are ripe and the landscape glows with warm colors. The light is especially beautiful in the morning – perfect for photos!
Activities
In addition to hiking, the region offers many other possibilities: Törggelen in rustic wine taverns, visiting local markets, or touring the old farms along the way.

Insider tips
Take time to rest on one of the sun terraces overlooking the valley.
Be sure to try the fresh chestnuts or a slice of apple strudel—preferably homemade!
Download a map to your cell phone beforehand, as the network is weak in some areas.

Practical information
Good hiking boots are essential, as the trail is root-covered in places. Don't forget a water bottle, sunscreen, and a light jacket—the weather can change quickly in the mountains.
Possible combinations
If you still have energy, you can extend your trip with a visit to:
Brixen: charming old town, great cafés, and cozy atmosphere.
Neustift Monastery: impressive abbey with a beautiful monastery garden.
Chiusa: small but interesting artists' village with many galleries.
Säben Abbey: picturesquely perched above Chiusa and a real photo opportunity.
Dining tip: In Brixen, we recommend the Traube restaurant, and in Feldthurns, the Zum Löwen inn for down-to-earth Tyrolean cuisine.

Conclusion
The Keschtnweg in South Tyrol is more than just a hike—it is a journey through the soul of the region. Anyone who wants to experience the scent of chestnuts, the warmth of the autumn sun, and the hospitality of the South Tyroleans should definitely take this trail. It is a true nature and culinary experience for the whole family.
