The Nockspitze, also known as Saile, is one of the most famous panoramic mountains in the Innsbruck area. At 2,404 metres above sea level, it towers high above the Inn Valley – and yet the summit is relatively easy to reach. Perfect for anyone who wants to enjoy spectacular panoramic views without undertaking an extreme mountain tour.
As a Tyrolean family, we love this hike because it perfectly combines nature, enjoyment and adventure – and remains feasible for young and old alike.

Why is a hike up the Nockspitze so special?
360° panorama: From the summit, you can see the entire Inn Valley, the Kalkkögel mountains, the Stubai Alps and even the Zillertal Alps.
Easily accessible: Due to its proximity to Innsbruck, the tour can also be ideally combined with a city break.
A wide range of options: From leisurely family hikes to more challenging routes, there is something for everyone.

Our personal impression
We have been to the Nockspitze several times and have been overwhelmed by the view every time. We particularly like the flat summit area with its meadow on one side – a perfect place for a mountain picnic. While the children play, you can relax and enjoy the view.
Our tips
Getting there
The best way to get to the Axamer Lizum ski area is by car (car parks available). From there, you can start directly with the lift and save yourself a lot of altitude metres. Those who prefer a more athletic approach can start the hike lower down in the valley.
Best season/time of day
The hike is particularly beautiful in summer and autumn, when the alpine pastures are in bloom and the larch trees change colour. Early in the morning or late in the afternoon, the light at the summit is magical and the trails are less crowded.

Activities
Short version: Take the lift to the mountain station (Birgitzköpflhaus), from there it's about 400 metres of elevation gain via an easy trail to the summit.
Longer version: From the Birgitzer Alm (delicious food!) to the Birgitzköpflhaus and on to the summit – ideal for those who want more elevation gain.
Picnic at the summit: The wide, flat summit is perfect for spreading out a blanket and enjoying the view in peace.
Safety & equipment
Even though the tour is considered ‘easy’, the Nockspitze is 2,404 metres above sea level and therefore in high alpine terrain. This means that weather changes, fog or thunderstorms can occur at any time.
Be sure to check the current weather report before you set off.
Wear sturdy footwear and take weatherproof clothing with you.
Sufficient water and sun protection are essential, as there are no springs or shaded areas at the summit.
Those travelling with children or with little mountain experience should stick to the shorter route with the lift.

Insider tips
Be sure to stop for refreshments at the Birgitzköpflhaus – rustic, cosy and serving Tyrolean specialities.
Combine the hike with a city break in Innsbruck – the proximity makes it possible to experience mountains and culture in one day.
Practical tip
The summit area drops steeply on one side – so always keep an eye on children.
Combination options
The Nockspitze can be ideally combined with other hikes in the area. Particularly worthwhile: a tour through the Kalkkögel, also known as the ‘Dolomites of North Tyrol’. Those who stay longer can combine several peaks.
👉 Conclusion: The Nockspitze is a mountain for everyone – for connoisseurs, families and summit collectors. Despite its easy accessibility, it remains a high-alpine tour where preparation and the right equipment are crucial. This will ensure that your trip is a safe and unforgettable experience.
