Overnight stays in mountain huts in Tyrol - three special places to switch off, marvel and enjoy in the midst of the Alpine idyll.

There are moments when it just feels good to get away. No Wi-Fi, no appointments, no noise - just mountains, silence and that feeling of really being there. For us, a night in a mountain hut is exactly that: a break from everyday life, combined with sport, nature and valuable time with the family.

That's why we love spending the night in mountain huts: The often demanding but beautiful ascent is a sporting challenge that clears the mind. Once at the top, things get cosy - no constant glances at your mobile phone, instead board games, card games or simply laughing together over a warm meal. This mixture of movement, simplicity and genuine connection - that's real quality time for us.

We have visited a number of huts in recent years. Three of them have particularly inspired us:

1. Solsteinhaus (Karwendel, Tyrol)

The path to the Solsteinhaus is a highlight in itself: over narrow paths and flowering alpine pastures, with fantastic views of the Karwendel mountains. After around three hours, you reach the hut at 1,806 metres - a place where time seems to slow down.

The hut itself is rustic, friendly and offers small rooms as well as dormitories with mattresses. The food? Hearty and homemade - perfect after a long day in the mountains. If you want, you can stay longer and go on tours to the Großer or Kleiner Solstein. If you are simply looking for peace and quiet, you will find it here.

2. Potsdamer Hütte (Sellrain, Tyrol)

A little less well-known - and that's exactly what makes it so special: the Potsdamer Hütte is idyllically situated in the Fotschertal valley at 2,020 metres. Surrounded by larch forests and high moors, the setting is almost mystical.

Inside, you are greeted by a warm parlour, simple but lovingly maintained rooms and a hut team that really cares. The Kaiserschmarrn pancakes are to die for - and if you like, you can hike on to the Roter Kogel or Fotscher Hütte the next day. Ideal for those who like it quiet and authentic.

3. Schweinfurter Hütte (Ötztal, Tyrol)

The Schweinfurter Hütte is a real classic - and yet it feels very special. As you ascend through the Horlachtal valley, you realise that there is space here. Space to breathe, to marvel, to switch off.

The hut is situated at 2,028 metres, nestled between alpine meadows and mountains. Once at the top, a cosy atmosphere, modern dormitories and really good food await. Particularly beautiful: the view from the terrace at sunset - with a warm tea (or a cold beer) in your hand.

Our conclusion:

An overnight stay in a mountain hut in Tyrol combines everything we love: Exercise, nature, community and cosiness. It's not about luxury - it's about the essentials. It's about shared experiences, genuine togetherness and the little things that are often neglected.

The next time you want to get out - go up there. Stay the night. And make time for what really matters.

Practical tips for your overnight stay at the mountain hut

  • Don't forget your sleeping bag! Even if bed linen is often available, having your own light sleeping bag or at least a duvet cover simply feels more comfortable and hygienic.

  • Pack light: The less luggage, the easier the ascent. Every gram counts - especially if the path to the hut is steep or longer.

  • Take cash with you: Many huts do not accept card payment. It is best to take enough cash with you in advance - this also applies to any stops at mountain huts.

  • A power bank is worth its weight in gold: electricity for charging mobile phones or devices is scarce or only available temporarily in many huts.

  • Slippers and headlamp: essential for everyday life in the hut! Slippers are a must, and a headlamp helps at night in the camp or on the way to the toilet.

  • Book early enough: Hiking and overnight stays in huts are booming - most huts in Tyrol are booked up quickly, especially at weekends or during the holidays. It's best to enquire and book early!

  • Room or dormitory? We prefer our own rooms, if available - these offer more privacy, especially as a family. Many huts also offer twin or triple rooms in addition to dormitories. The dormitory is cheaper, but you sleep in the same room as many others.

  • Estimate costs realistically: An overnight stay in a mountain hut is a special experience - but not cheap. For a family with one child in a triple room including half boardtspielt.

With these tips, you'll be well prepared to enjoy your time at the hut to the full!
